What is a Brownfield
The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines Brownfield sites as “real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant.”
The SMPDC Brownfield Redevelopment Program works to help transform these properties into community assets by providing funding and guidance for the environmental investigations necessary for redevelopment. The EPA provides funding through the SMPDC Brownfields Redevelopment Program to help eligible applicants assess and cleanup Brownfield sites in preparation for redevelopment.
What are the characteristics of a good Brownfield candidate? Factors include:
- The site that was once developed but is now either underutilized or abandoned.
- The site has either real or perceived environmental contamination.
- The site is not listed on the National Priorities List (Superfund sites).
- Someone is interested in redeveloping the site- ideal candidates already have a redevelopment plan.
