“Brownfields” are abandoned, idled, or underused industrial or commercial properties with real or perceived environmental contamination. Through grants from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Southern Maine Planning and Development Commission (SMPDC) provides funding assistance and technical guidance to assist those interested in redeveloping Brownfield sites in York and southern Oxford Counties.

Addressing potential environmental issues, especially financial and regulatory hurdles, is often intimidating and can create a barrier to the redevelopment or expanded use of these sites. The Southern Maine Planning and Development Commission’s Brownfield Redevelopment Program helps convert Brownfields from community liabilities into community assets by providing funding and guidance to navigate the environmental process from environmental site assessment (ESA) to cleanup.




SMPDC partners with U. S. EPA Region 1 in Boston and the Maine Department of Environmental Protection in Augusta. In addition, SMPDC partners with municipalities throughout York and southern Oxford Counties.
