Route 236 Corridor Implementation Committee This Committee, formed in the Fall of 2004, includes the towns of Kittery, Eliot, and South Berwick, Maine DOT, the Maine Turnpike Authority, York County Community Action, the Seacoast New Hampshire Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), and others. The Committee was formed as a response to several different studies completed in the last 3-5 years. This effort, while updating data on current conditions of the roadway, almost exclusively focus on implementing strategies and programs which will attempt to preserve existing capacity and reduce future municipal and state expenditures on Route 236. The plan is to work with not only the Corridor Committee, but also municipal decision makers in all towns to ensure that these recommendations are considered and adopted. Route 113 Corridor Planning There are currently two planning activities occuring in this corridor: 1) an effort to determine the eligibility of Route 113 and Route 2 for a scenic byway designation; and 2) an effort to use Community Development Block Grant Funds to assess regional economic development opportunities for the Route 113 Corridor. Scenic Byway Planning The Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments (AVCOG), in partnership with the Western Maine Cultural Alliance (WMCA) and the Southern Maine Regional Planning Commission (SMRPC), received a grant from the Maine Department of Transportation to determine Route 113 and Route 2's eligibility for scenic byway designation. The target area includes Route 113 from Standish to Gilead and Route 2 from Gilead to Bethel. See the Route 113 map below. WMCA and SMRPC are currently working with towns along the corridor to answer questions and gather support for the scenic byways program. Public meetings are planned to answer questions and record important information about the corridor. The agencies are also in the process of gathering background, intrisic resource and scenic byway criteria assessment information for the corridor.
